Tummy Time Painting
Age: four- six months until 18 months
Small group time:
Originating idea: I saw this idea and thought it would be great to get in some tummy time and expose the child to art. The kids love to feel and squish paint and the younger child can do that and still move around the paper without the mess.
Materials for child and teacher:
Each child will get an 8x10 piece of paper with finger paint squirted on it. It is then placed in a zip-loc bag
Beginning:
Announce that the children are going to have tummy time and create a painting!
Middle:
Place the child on his/her tummy with the paper in front of them. Allow them to rub, squeeze and create a masterpiece!
Let them have tummy time painting as long as they are showing interest.
End:
When we are done with our painting we are going to read a book and get ready for lunch
Earlier children may:
need a boppy pillow to support them during tummy time. This will help the activity be a little easier for them. You can also hold the paper up to them so that they can paint as long as they are using the boppy and are on their tummies.
Later children may:
Want to take their paper out of the bag and feel the paint on their fingers.
Follow up ideas:
If the children enjoy this activity you can put them in a highchair or put out a large piece of paper and let them paint with their fingers. There are edible paints that are available or that you can make.
