Smelly Jars
Age: birth until age two
Originating Idea: I am choosing to implement this activity so that the children can be exposed to a variety of smells. I took small plastic containers with holes in the tops. I put a piece of lavender in one, lemon in another and rosemary in another.
Materials for child and teacher:
A plastic jar with holes in the top
Beginning:
During small group time or when you are changing a diaper you can let the little ones sniff and explore their sense of smell
Middle:
Pass around the small jar and let each child have a turn smelling a variety of things. It really interests them to explore this area.
End:
"After we are done smelling the jars we can go an explore outside!"
Earlier children may:
Enjoy holding the jar while getting their diaper changed.
Later children may:
Want to hold and smell each jar several times and see which one that they like best.
Follow up ideas: Put different smells in the jars. The options are endless! Basil, Coffee beans, flowers, etc...
