Age: 1 year - 3years
Originating Idea: During lunch, children saved the seeds from their apples and asked to plant them. As the weather got warmer, children started talking about flowers and other plants.
Materials: apple and bean seeds, potting soil, small container for each child, scoops, watering can
Beginning:
Sit with children around mat to keep floor clean. Remind children about the apple seeds they saved. Tell them that you have the materials to plant the seeds, along with some bean seeds to plant as well.
Middle:
Give each child a container, a scoop, and some seeds. Ask the children what they will need to do so that the seeds can grow. Move around and provide assistance as the children plant their seeds. They may fill their containers with soil or just add a little, plant their seeds deep in the soil or just under the surface, plant several seeds or just a few, and add water.
End:
Put containers near a window so the kids can watch the seeds grow.
Early learners: These children may only want to plant one seed. They may need help with scooping the dirt and may want to use their hands
Middle: These kids will plant their seeds but may need assistance with how much dirt to put in or how many seeds
Advanced: These learners will not have a problem following directions
Follow-up: Leave the plants in the window so that children can observe their growth and add water when needed.
