Originating Idea: Children were stacking rocks in the sand table and hiding bugs inside of them and talking about how they were building bug houses and that they had places for them to hide.
Materials: Colored Popsicle Sticks, Picture of the type of the house they live in (apartment, house, mobile home, town house), glue and crayons and paper
Opening Statement: "I noticed that you were building bug houses and that they were all different. I thought that it would be fun to build our own homes with popsicle sticks and glue. That way we could share what our homes look like with our friends."
During Large group time, we graphed what kind home we lived in, then we read a book "My Home" that talked about the different rooms in homes. Many students who did not have certain rooms in their home (dining room) commentend that they did not have that room. Students also discussed different furniture and items that were in their homes and what they were used for. We also discussed how everyone is different and that it is ok that we dont all have the same types of homes. After our discussion, I told the students to choose picture of their home and asked if they could build build their homes with the popsicle sticks and glue.
Earlier: These learners can draw pictures with crayons and glue sticks on paper how they believe their house looks
Middle: These children can draw and create with the popsicle sticks the different rooms that are in the house
Later: These kids can draw and label the different rooms
Scaffolding: I asked the students to tell me about their pictures and gave them a five minute warning to finish their work. For students who needed more time, I gave them the option to finish during work time the next day.
Follow Up: Provide various building materials and other materials Play Dough or Blocks for them create and build different buildings.
