Age: one year - preschool
Originating Idea: A few of the children in my class had gotten sick over the month so we talked about germs and came up with ideas to keep germs out of our classroom.
Materials: soapy water, gloves (optional), sponges, wash clothes, dish towels
Opening statement: I began the lesson by brining all the kids in my group to the table, we talked about how germs can make us sick and ways to get rid of germs. I showed them the materials I brought with me and we discussed what they all were and I asked them how we might use the items? The children then said we can wash stuff with them. Some of the children might decide they want to dry instead of wash the items.
Middle:
The children might wash chairs, tables, and classroom toys. They might just wash the top of things. Some of the children might flip over objects and wash the sides, top, bottom.
Earlier Learners may want to to wash the tops of tables only or dry the things instead of washing
Middle Learners may want to explore where germs may be and clean the areas
Advanced Learners may want to wash and dry items.
Scaffolding: Comment on how germs are everywhere and ask different ways that they can keep the germs away
End:
I will end by giving the chidlren a 5 minute warning. Then I will allow the children the chance to talk about what items they washed or what role they played in helping to get the germs away. I will give them a few minutes to discuss before going home for the day.
Follow up:
The following day we continued our talk about germs and practiced using soapy water to wash our hands.
