Obstacle Course Fun This applies to gross motor skills
Obstacle Course
Small group time or Large group time
Age: one - preschool
Originating Idea: The kids like to run around outside or in the gym and "race" each other. I thought they would like to do an obstacle course with their friends.
Materials: A line of tape on the floor or a balance beam, a couple of cones, some tumbling mats and a few scarves.
Beginning:
"I was noticing how you run around the playground sometimes and pretend that you are running a race. I thought that we could do a fun obstacle course inside! Won't that be fun?"
Middle:
Explain that you want the children to carefully walk in a straight line across the tape, walk in between the cones, throw the scarf in the air and roll on the mat."
End:
"Wow you must be tired! Let's line up and go and get a drink!"
Early learners may only do a couple of the stations and not in the right order
Middle learners may do the course completely but need some help with the sommersault
Advanced learners will complete the entire course
Extending the lesson: leave the tape on the ground so they can practice walking in a straight line, leave out the mat so they can practice sommersaults
KDI observed: Physical Development and Health (moving the whole body)
