Sink or float
Materials: water table
different objects such as golf balls, plastic dinosaurs, rocks, plastic eggs, etc...
Opening Statement: I thought that we could use the water table and predict whether these objects are going to sink or float on top of the water. We are going to vote about each object and make a chart and see if we are right.
Early Learners: These children may not have any idea about sinking or floating and will just want to play in the water
Middle Learners: These kids will make guesses
Advanced: These children will predict what will sink and what will float.
Scaffolding: Help the early learners observe the different objects and make predicitons
Help the middle learners make decisions and see if their predictions are correct.
Advanced learners can be asked why they made the predictions that they did.
Extending: Show the children how their predictions came out compared to the actual results. Discuss why things float and why they sink.
